books for
1st graders

Reading is
a developmental skill that children master at different ages. Some children will easily read the books on this list before they enter school. Others will not be ready to read them until third grade.

Children need to have many successful experiences reading easy, appealing and interesting books. The more success children have at reading, the more they will want to read. The more they read, the better readers they will become.

We hope that these graded lists will help you find fun and interesting books for your child at his or her reading level.

The books on the list are written with a controlled vocabulary to make it easier for your child to be successful at their reading efforts. The JE-1R(Junior Easy First Reader) books are Pre-K thru 1st  grade reading levels. JE(Junior Easy) books are geared at 2nd & 3rd  grade reading levels.

Ask your children’s librarian to help you find readers for your 1st grader.
