Books for Preschoolers

PRESCHOOLERS ARE:
Full of questions – why? when? how? They still may not be
able to sit still for long. Continue choosing books with simple stories and
uncomplicated plots. They will still love to hear stories with rhymes, repetition,
chanting or refrains.
Beginning to understand more
concepts. They can match and sort items by color and shape. Giving them
paste, crayons, paper, clay, chalk and marking pens will help them develop
their hand and small motor skills.
Starting to pick up books and reading them to themselves. They look at the
pictures and tell their own stories. They will also start telling you the
story and acting out stories with make believe play, dress up and
puppets.
Beginning to spontaneously recite
songs, poems and rhymes that they have heard. Continue to sing and share
music with them. Let them explore the rhythms and sounds of polkas, reggae,
classical and dance music. Teach them simple circle and movement games by
using recorded music.
Continue to share a special time
with books and stories every day. Your loving presence and time is the best
way to guarantee that your child will develop a love of reading and learning.
Make a special time in your week to come to the library to attend storytime and check out books.
Ask your children’s librarian to help you identify great books and
music for your preschool child.
