Books for Toddlers

toddlers and books

Your toddler is a bundle of energy and it is often hard to get them to sit down for extended periods of time to listen to a story. Choose short, simple stories and try to share stories several times throughout the day.

Continue to choose books with bright colors, familiar objects and few words. The books can begin to have a storyline that moves from one page to the next, though your toddler may sometimes only want to talk about the pictures rather than hear the story. Let your child choose the books to read and let them turn the pages. As you read your child’s favorite stories aloud, he may begin to anticipate certain words or phrases. You can encourage him to fill in the blanks by pausing at the well-known word. You may also want to ask your child questions about favorite books, or let him tell the story in his own words.

Your toddler will begin to master the words for colors, shapes, animal names, small and large body parts. This is a good age to introduce ABC and counting books, as well as “concept books.”  Concept books help children understand abstract ideas such as “up and down,” ”inside and outside,” shapes and time. Add in a few informational books to your book time to expand their world and their vocabulary.

Your active toddler will love stories and music with sounds, rhythm, rhyme and recurring words.  Share nursery rhymes, rhyming poetry, finger-plays and recorded music. Their little bodies will naturally move to the rhythm. Encourage them to clap, sway, dance and march to the music. Let them make sounds of the animals or act out parts of the stories or chant along with favorite phrases.
