What if you could access high-quality software for free? This talk introduces FOSS (Free & Open-Source Software), also known as “Libre” software.

Topics include:

  • What FOSS is and why it matters
  • How you already use FOSS without realizing it
  • Differences between FOSS, paid, and proprietary software
  • Why some software is only partially open-source
  • Why FOSS exists, but is not well-known
  • Benefits and potential risks of both FOSS and non-FOSS software
  • How to use FOSS to meet individual needs
  • How FOSS can positively impact both digital and physical communities

Information on free resources for further learning and individualized tech help will be shared. Snacks and refreshments provided. Registration encouraged.

Speaker: John Williams

John Williams has worked for 20+ years in Tech and holds an M.A. in Psychology.

John has a Master’s Degree in Psychology & Communications and has been teaching and building for the web since its earliest days. He is an AARP‑certified technology educator, passionate about making his wide range of knowledge in tech approachable, and its benefits accessible for all ages and skill levels.

He also enjoys iced tea and occasionally making instrumental music.
