Build a Home Library, Build a Lifelong Reader

Post Date:06/01/2026

A growing body of research suggests that one of the most powerful tools for a child’s future success may be as simple as having books at home. Studies from around the world have found that children who grow up with access to books develop stronger literacy, numeracy, and technology skills that benefit them well into adulthood.

At the Loveland Public Library, helping families build home libraries is an important part of supporting lifelong learning. In addition to lending books, the library provides opportunities for children and teens to receive their own books throughout the year, thanks to the generous support of the Friends of the Loveland Public Library.

Here’s How We’re Helping Build Bright Futures Through Books:

Read 365 Challenge: Children ages birth to 11 who participate during the school year can earn prize books to keep as they reach reading milestones. Registration forms are available at the Children’s Desk.

First Grade Tours: In partnership with the Thompson School District, first-grade students visit the library, receive a library card, and take home a free book.

Summer Learning Program 2026 (May 22–July 31): Youth ages 0–17 receive a free book when they register and another after completing 40 days of reading, adding two new titles to their home library during the summer.

Coming Soon – 1000 Books Before Kindergarten: Families with young children will soon have opportunities to earn free books and build early literacy skills together.

Every book a child owns is another opportunity to spark curiosity, strengthen reading habits, and build confidence. We’re excited to continue supporting families in creating homes full of stories, imagination, and possibility.
